Change the keyboard layout Not happy with your computer’s keyboard layout? KeyTweak is a free software program that allows you to map keys on your keyboard. If you change your mind and want to restore it, it’s easy to reset all mappings with just one click. You can also disable keys, enable others and save your redefinitions with just a few KeyTweaks? For power users, there’s nothing like mapping the keys on your keyboard just right for your needs. KeyTweak allows you to change the way your keyboard behaves when you press its keys. After using KeyTweak, your keys will generate your keystrokes (function() { (‘review-app-page-desktop’); }); KeyTweak is useful for people who work with alternative keyboard settings, such as using computers in other countries. You may also need to customize your keyboard to work with certain games or computer programs. KeyTweak is a small, lightweight (less than 500kb) utility developed by Travis Krumsick. This program is available on Windows Vista computers. It is also compatible with Windows XP, Windows 2000 and Windows 7. Although KeyTweak is no longer developed or supported, it works on Windows 10 machines. KeyTweak is not available for Mac computers. Alternatives to KeyTweak include Sharpkeys, Autohotkey, Google Input Tools for PC, and On-Screen Keyboard Portable. How do I install KeyTweak? Downloading KeyTweak from Softonic is easy and safe. You just need to run the installer and then follow the on-screen instructions, including agreeing to the license agreement. Next, go to the Start menu and find the KeyTweak submenu. Here you will also find manuals and uninstall applications. To launch the application, you need to click on the KeyTweak item in the KeyTweak menu. How to use KeyTweak When you open KeyTweak, the main window will display an image of the keyboard,along with a menu bar, a remapping section, a Keyboard Controls section, a custom buttons section, a pending changes section, and a button to toggle between full and half teaching methods. You can also access the KeyTweak manual here from the Help menu. Remember that keyboards are not specifically mapped to your keyboard; it is universal. Below the menu bar at the top of the window, the Remapping section contains a list of keys and buttons that are remapped to restore default values and display raw maps. You can do this via the drop-down menu and the Remap button. Special Buttons, on the right side of the window, allows you to map some (but not all) of the special buttons your keyboard may have, such as movie playback controls. In the lower right corner, the Pending Changes box shows all changes that will take effect the next time the computer restarts. The Full/Hulf Teaching Mode button at the bottom of the window gives you the ability to switch between the two teaching modes. At first glance, KeyTweak may seem difficult to use, but the extensive manual provides step-by-step instructions. On the virtual keyboard, you select the keys you want to change. It will match the keys on your own keyboard and have its own number. After you click on a virtual key, you’ll see its current mapping listed in the Keyboard Controls section. You will then go to the Select New Mapping drop-down menu to select a new mapping for this key. You will then click on the remapping key and you will see this remapping appear in the pending changes section. Any changes you make using KeyTweak require a reboot to take effect. You will then click the Apply button to apply the changes and the program will give you the option to restart your computer immediately. You can also stop the remapping by clicking the Clear buttonall. You can repeat this process for as many keys as you like, defining new mappings or disabling key functions. After you restart, your keyboard will be mapped as you specified while using the program. KeyTweak is ideal primarily for redefining individual keys and fixing minor keyboard annoyances, rather than changing the overall behavior of your keyboard. Remember that the changes you make in KeyTweak are global, so they will affect all users on the device. Full teaching mode is an alternative method for remapping the desired keys. When you click on the Full Teaching Mode button, a new window will open. After you click Start Teaching Mode, you can actually manually select a keyboard key for one slot (#1) and another key for another slot (#2), then map #1 to #2. Half Learn mode isn’t useful because it’s basically the same method as the default keymapping mode. Does KeyTweak have limitations? Although an effective program for changing the way your keyboard works, KeyTweak has some limitations. KeyTweak can’t combine keys, so for example, you won’t be able to map Ctrl-Alt-Delete to a single keystroke. It should also not affect the function key on the laptop or the pause/stop key. Some users may also be disappointed that not all special keys on their keyboard are keymapping software, free. There are many reasons why you might want to change the behavior of your keyboard. You might keep pressing the wrong key on your new laptop. Or maybe you need to redefine your keyboard to run a specific program or play a game. KeyTweak can help you do this in a simple and effective way, although there are some limitations. KeyTweak is also useful if your keyboard is broken and some keys no longer work.
